Our Cause Mapping Workshop + Documentation adds an additional day/session of documentation and facilitation instruction onto our signature Cause Mapping workshop. The third day provides hands-on instruction and practice using the Cause Mapping template in Microsoft Excel and exercises to practice conducting a complete investigation.

You will learn how to:

  • Break down and analyze any problem within your organization
  • Apply valuable communication skills and techniques in day-to-day problem solving
  • Apply fundamental cause-and-effect relationship patterns to expand your solution set
  • Identify the most effective solution(s) to a problem
  • Avoid the 5 miscommunication traps that derail group problem-solving sessions
  • Incorporate facilitation tips and strategies when leading a group problem-solving session
  • Drive a “prevention” focus instead of “blame” focus during an investigation
  • Efficiently organize and document a complete investigation within the Cause Mapping Template
  • Build a Cumulative Cause Map to share lessons learned across your organization

Our Cause Mapping workshops will benefit anyone who wants to improve their problem-solving and problem communication skills. These skills are essential regardless of your industry or role within your organization.

All of our workshops cover the fundamentals of effective problem solving and show you how to expand this process based on the complexity of the problems you work.

Typical problem-solving role

  • Complex problem solver
  • Investigation lead
  • Excel documentation wizard

The Cause Mapping + Documentation workshop is designed for those who are solving high-risk, highly complex problems and want to be able to quickly facilitate and document the details in Excel.

What type of problems do you need to solve?

The severity of a problem should dictate the level of analysis. For high-risk problems, a more detailed analysis will reveal a larger set of solutions across multiple work processes. More solutions = greater risk reduction.

Attendee objective: solve complex, high-risk problems

  • Analyze and solve complex problems requiring 30+ whys in parallel paths.
  • Master facilitation skills and document efficiently in an Excel file.

Each workshop attendee will receive:

  • Extensive Cause Mapping Workbook
  • Support handouts
  • Titanic poster (public workshop only, one copy provided for onsite workshops)
  • Cause Mapping Templates
  • Online access to attendee resources
  • Completion certificate with CEU credit

Is this Cause Mapping workshop just for people who lead complex incident investigations?

While Cause Mapping is an excellent tool to improve your ability to facilitate a complex investigation, the lessons learned can be universally applied to basic problem solving and problem communication. In fact, even if you aren't building a Cause Map, the workshop teaches you why people argue and debate, and provides approaches for managing even day-to-day problems within your organization and personal life.

Are there any prerequisites for attending this workshop?

There are no prerequisites. Day 3 of the workshop is focused on using the Microsoft Excel Cause Mapping Template, so you will need a laptop computer with an external mouse. The computer will need to have Microsoft Excel loaded as well. The Cause Mapping template is compatible with any version of Excel (2003, 2007, 2010, 2013).

Why do I need an external mouse?

Many of the Excel shortcuts require moving boxes while at the same time pressing and holding specific keys on the keyboard. This is significantly easier using an external mouse versus trying to manipulate with the touchpad on your computer.

I have a Mac computer with Excel. Will that work for Day 3?

While you can use a Mac with Excel, some of the shortcut functions don't work the same way.

I'd like to attend but can't travel to one of the cities listed. Are you coming to a city near me?

While we try to focus on larger cities to accommodate travel, we are always looking to host our public workshop in other areas given enough demand. Another alternative would be to attend our Live Online Public Workshop. You will receive the same quality training and instruction from a live instructor without the associated travel costs. For more information, view our online workshop page.

What is the cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel, your registration can be transferred to another party or an upcoming workshop (either live or online). The registration fee will be refunded for cancellations made more than two weeks prior to the first date of the workshop, less a 10% processing fee. If you fail to cancel, transfer, or reschedule your registration two weeks prior to the workshop, the registration fee will not be refunded.

A very enjoyable and engaging training course. I learned a lot and would feel confident in applying the techniques discussed during the three days. The pace was just right and the relaxed atmosphere allowed plenty of open discussion. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone considering it.

Cause Mapping and the provided templates will be extremely useful when problem solving. The tools are intuitive to use, and everyone will be able to have input to find the cause. This same thought process can be used to PREVENT issues before they occur. Thanks for a great workshop.

My colleague and I left the workshop with new ideas about how to address patient safety challenges through use of cause mapping, and were able to use these skills to lead an effective meeting and develop corrective actions the following week.

I found the workshop really interesting. Honestly I had pretty low expectations going into RCA training, figuring it would be pretty straightforward and dry. The presentation definitely wasn’t dry, and the simplicity & analytical strength of the methods you taught us are an elegant way to approach problems. I think what resonated with me most was the emphasis on multiple root causes + system thinking, rather than the binary right/wrong approach.

The Cause Mapping Workshop is a fantastic course for learning problem-solving techniques and leadership skills. Lots of real-life examples make the class interesting and relevant. By the end of the class, we had — in a couple of hours — determined a path forward on an issue that had been plaguing our organization for a couple of years. This course is definitely worth the time.
